The 20-yard is the size we tag as "popular" in our pricing table, and that's true for residential cleanouts and typical contractor work. Some materials aren't accepted in any size (concrete, brick, asphalt pavement, dirt, sod, rock, sand, gravel, tree limbs, stumps) — those need a different hauler. See "What we don't accept" below.
What fits in a 20-yard
From actual jobs we've run:
- Whole-floor renovation debris — walls + flooring + ceiling work from an entire floor. Standard upstairs reno or first-floor reconfig.
- Full additions framing waste — dimensional lumber, drywall, insulation, flooring offcuts from an addition under ~600 sq ft.
- Large estate cleanouts — multi-room furniture, housewares, decades of accumulated boxes. The most common 20-yard job in our residential dispatch.
- Restaurant or office decommissioning — fixtures, partition walls, light millwork, dropped-ceiling tile.
- Mid-size demolition debris — wood-frame outbuilding teardown, deck removal, fence + posts.
- Above-ground pool removal with light decking — drained pool, surrounding wood deck, pump and filter.
- Large deck removal — 400+ sq ft single or multi-level deck.
- Whole-garage demolition debris — wood-frame structure only. Concrete slab and footings aren't accepted in our cans (different hauler).
- Single-layer asphalt roof tear-off — about 13 squares within the 4,000-lb cap. Right size for a typical 1,300 sq ft residential roof. Past the cap is $0.10/lb passthrough.

What we don't accept
Some materials are off the table in any roll-off or Grizzly Bag. We don't haul them at all — there's no smaller-can or different-bag workaround.
- Concrete and brick — slab tear-up, walkway demo, chimney teardown, foundation pieces
- Asphalt pavement and millings — driveway tear-up, parking lot work, road millings
- Dirt, soil, and sod — excavation spoils, regrading, landscape replacement
- Rock, sand, and gravel — including decorative stone, paver base, beach sand
- Tree limbs and stumps — including root balls
For projects centered on these materials, you need a hauler that specializes in heavy clean fill — a different operation than ours.
Asphalt shingles ARE accepted — any size, including the 20. The 20-yard fits about 13 squares within the 4,000-lb cap (shingles run ~300 lbs/square). Past the cap is $0.10/lb passthrough at the transfer-station rate, no markup. Some haulers oversize on tear-offs and bill back overweight charges they didn't quote up front — we'd rather quote the right size and the math straight at booking.

20-yard vs. multiple 10s on rotation
Real decision shape from our dispatch logs:
- Single-trip cleanout, mixed debris → 20 wins on cost per cubic yard. One delivery, one pickup, the can sits in the driveway for the rental window.
- Multi-week project, fast turnover → multiple 10s on rotation. Each 10 carries its own 1,000-lb weight allowance independently. Rotation pattern is 1-2 swap-outs per week depending on pace; we coordinate the dispatch.
- Roof tear-offs (shingles) → 10 / 15 / 20 / 30-40 depending on roof size; pick by squares.
- Concrete, brick, asphalt pavement → not accepted; different hauler.
- Tight driveway → never a reason to downsize — every size we run takes the identical 15 ft × 8 ft footprint; picking a bigger size means taller walls and a bigger weight allowance, never a longer can. If access is genuinely tight, text us a photo and we'll confirm fit before you pick.
- Estate cleanout where most contents are furniture → 20 unless the property has heavy contents (filing cabinets, old appliances at scale).
The math on rotation: a 10-yard rental is $447, two 10s = $894. A 20-yard is $647. The 20 wins on cost when it works. The two 10s win on flexibility when the schedule benefits from fresh capacity mid-job.
Driveway footprint reality
Every size we run takes the same footprint — 15 feet long, 8 feet wide — about the length of one parking spot. The 20-yard doesn't claim any more driveway than our smaller packages; what it adds is height. Its walls stand 5 feet, the tallest in the lineup, which is where the extra volume lives. Choosing a size never changes the spot the can takes — it changes the wall height and the weight allowance that come with it.
The other thing the spec sheet doesn't tell you: the rear swing door opens with step-in access — every can in the fleet has one. You walk material in — wheelbarrow, dolly, armloads — instead of lifting everything over a 5-foot wall. On a whole-floor reno, that's the difference between loading for an afternoon and loading for a weekend.
What we still check before the truck rolls — it's the approach, not the spot:
- The line in — the delivery truck needs a workable straight-ish run to the placement and room to tip the bed.
- Overhead — low branches or wires over the approach can pinch a delivery even when the placement spot itself is clear.
- Slope — a steep grade matters more than driveway length.

For lawn placement: we put planks under the wheels. Minor turf compression is normal; the lawn recovers. We don't recommend lawn drops for the 20-yard if the project will span more than a couple weeks or it's been raining — soft ground doesn't hold the loaded weight at this size as well as it does the 10.
