What we take, what we don't

On the junk truck: furniture, mattresses and box springs ($50 mattress fee where a unit is too damaged or soiled to route through CT's free mattress-recycling program), appliances — refrigerant handled per EPA rules, $50 CFC fee on freon units — televisions and electronics, exercise equipment, general household junk, garage, basement, and attic contents, estate contents, hot tubs, sheds, and decks (demolition quoted separately). Tires ride at a $50 tire fee.

Not on the junk truck: concrete, brick, asphalt, dirt, soil, sod, rock, sand, gravel, tree limbs, and stumps. When a Ridgefield job has real volume of those — a stone-wall demo, a patio tear-out — we drop a dumpster instead, sized with the correct weight allowance for heavy debris.

Hazardous waste (paint, motor oil, gasoline, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, asbestos, biohazard material, lithium batteries) never rides on the truck either. Disposal rules in Ridgefield

The Ridgefield Transfer Station is at 55 South Street, with the Recycling Center separate at 59 South Street — open Monday–Saturday 7:30 AM–3:00 PM, closed New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Recycling coordinator: (203) 431-2748. Every vehicle needs a permit, and one permit covers both facilities. Permits are sold at the Tax Collector's Office at 400 Main Street — 2026–2027 permits are available now. Four tiers, current as of July 1, 2025: $20 resident, $50 non-resident, $50 local business, $100 non-local business.

At the scale, resident permit holders pay by the pound: household garbage (MSW) $0.05/lb, scrap metal $0.05/lb, brush $0.08/lb, construction and demolition debris $0.10/lb. Non-resident permit holders pay $0.10/lb on all material types. Small loads skip the scale: a vehicle carrying 120 pounds or less pays bag pricing — residents $5 for one to five 13-gallon bags, $10 for six to ten; non-residents $10 for one to ten. More than ten bags and you're on the scale. And bring a card — the Transfer Station takes debit and credit only, no cash.

Bulky waste — a couch, a chair, the output of a small remodeling project — has had its own home since August 2024: a dedicated 20-yard container beside the MSW disposal building. It's for residential items, explicitly not for commercial construction debris. Full details at ridgefieldct.gov.

The mixed-load trap

Ridgefield's schedule has one rule that costs people real money: don't mix brush, household garbage, bulky waste, or C&D in one load. A mixed load is charged at the highest applicable rate — C&D, $0.10/lb — for the ENTIRE load. A garage cleanout is exactly the load that does this: bagged household junk, a few branches from behind the shed, a couple pieces of old lumber, all in one truck bed. Show up like that and the whole thing weighs in as construction debris. Separating the load before you drive over is the cheap fix; not knowing the rule is the expensive one.

Doing it yourself in Ridgefield

Honest answer: Ridgefield is genuinely inexpensive for self-haul. A resident permit is $20, and even at the top $0.10/lb C&D rate, a 300-pound sectional is roughly $30 at the scale. Household garbage at $0.05/lb is cheaper still. If you own a truck, the load is modest, and you keep the material types separated, the station is hard to beat on price — the town's own published numbers put Ridgefield's residential solid waste at about 1,600 pounds per person in 2023 and 1,660 in 2024, and the station is how a lot of it moves.

The counterweight comes from the town itself: large residential projects — more than 4 cubic yards — "should be managed with an onsite dumpster rental at the job site," and the bulky container is closed to commercial construction debris, so a contractor's demo load isn't an option there. That 4-yard line is where a Ridgefield roll-off dumpster takes over: one placement, one weight allowance, load as the project goes. Mixed loads reprice upward, as above. And the rest of the ledger is the usual: no truck, second-floor furniture, disassembly, real weight, or a Saturday you'd rather keep. And one thing that surprises people: unlike some neighboring towns, Ridgefield sells permits to non-residents and businesses at $50. An executor, a landlord, or family clearing a parent's house CAN use the station here — they'll just pay the $0.10/lb non-resident rate on everything.
