Connecticut is one of the few states where getting rid of a mattress is genuinely free — and one where most people still don't know it. The state's Bye Bye Mattress program, run by the Mattress Recycling Council and funded by a recycling fee you already paid when the mattress was new, takes mattresses and box springs at no charge at participating drop-off sites across CT. We route every program-eligible mattress we haul through that stream.

So what you're paying us for is the part the program doesn't do: showing up, carrying the thing down from wherever it lives, and making it gone today. Pickups start at the $179 minimum-load tier across Fairfield, New Haven, Hartford, Litchfield, and Middlesex counties plus lower New London — same-day for most of it when you call before 11 AM.

The program does the disposal. We do the everything-else.

Here's the honest shape of mattress removal in Connecticut, and it's worth thirty seconds before you book anyone:

The recycling is already paid for. Every new mattress sold in CT includes a recycling fee that funds the statewide takeback program. Any used mattress or box spring — regardless of age or where it was bought — can be dropped at a participating site free. What's left is a transportation problem. A queen mattress doesn't fold, doesn't fit in a sedan, and doesn't care that the transfer station closes at noon on Saturday. That's the actual product on this page: a crew that gets it out of the house — around the stairwell corner it barely made it up in the first place — and onto a truck that was coming through your town anyway.

And we use the program too. Program-eligible mattresses we collect route through the recycling stream, not the tipping floor. You don't pay a disposal fee for a mattress the state already covered; you pay for truck space and crew time, which is the only honest thing left to charge for.

When the $50 fee applies — and when it doesn't

The program has one real standard: clean and dry. A mattress with ordinary sag, surface stains, and two decades of faithful service routes through fine. What doesn't: units that are soaked through, heavily soiled, or contaminated past what a recycling line can process. Those get refused at the stream and go to regular disposal, which carries a real per-unit cost at the transfer station.

That cost is the $50-per-unit fee — a pass-through, not a markup, and it applies only to units the program can't take. The same fee applies if you load a mattress into one of our roll-off dumpsters, where everything ships as mixed disposal. We'll tell you which side of the line your mattress is on when we see it (or from your photos), before anything is loaded — never on the invoice as a surprise.

Bed bugs are their own category: if an infestation is in play, say so on the phone. Sealed-bag handling protects the crew and the truck, and it's a plan-ahead item, not a spring-it-on-arrival item.

The ladder above is the same canonical 13-tier truck-space pricing as every junk-removal job we run — no mattress-specific rate card. The two tiers that matter here: a lone mattress rides the $179 minimum load, and "Mattress + box spring, or small couch + a few items" is the written description of the $239 tier — the single most common mattress booking there is.

From there it's just volume: add the frame, the headboard, the boxes from the closet, and the tier moves the way the ladder always moves. Stairs don't change the number, third-floor walkups don't change the number, and the count of mattresses matters less than the truck space they fill.   2. Same-day or scheduled. Before 11 AM usually means today across most of our service area; otherwise next-day is standard.

  4. Carry-out. Two-person crew, doorways and stairwells handled — it's the bulk of the job and it's included.

Is mattress recycling really free in Connecticut?
The state program is, yes. Connecticut's Bye Bye Mattress program — run by the Mattress Recycling Council and funded by a recycling fee collected when new mattresses are sold — takes mattresses and box springs at no charge at participating drop-off sites, mostly municipal transfer stations. The 'free' part covers the disposal; getting a queen mattress into a vehicle and across town during transfer-station hours is the part people end up paying us for.
When does the $50 mattress fee apply?
Only when a mattress can't ride the program: units that are soaked through, heavily soiled, or otherwise past the program's clean-and-dry standard get refused at the recycling stream and go to regular disposal instead — that's when the $50 per-unit pass-through applies. Same rule if you load a mattress into one of our roll-off dumpsters. A normal old mattress with ordinary stains and sag routes through the program, and you pay only the truck-space tier for the pickup itself.
What does mattress pickup cost?
A single mattress rides the $179 minimum-load tier; the canonical mattress-plus-box-spring combination is literally the description of our $239 eighth-truck tier. Add more items and the truck-space ladder does what it always does — you pay for space used, never per item. Stairs and carries don't change the tier.
Do box springs follow the same rules as mattresses?
Yes — the state program takes box springs on the same free, clean-and-dry terms as mattresses, and the same soiled-unit exception applies. The one practical difference: box springs are more awkward than heavy, and older ones shed staples and splinters, so they're gloved-crew items even though they weigh half what the mattress does.
What about the bed frame and headboard?
Different category entirely. Frames, headboards, and footboards are furniture, not program material — they ride the normal truck-space ladder with everything else, and metal frames get pulled for scrap recycling. I have an estate cleanout with five mattresses. How does that price?
As truck space, not as five mattress fees. Multi-mattress hauls bundle into whatever tier the whole load fills — that's almost always cheaper than any per-item math, and we route the program-eligible units through the recycling stream at no extra charge. The mattresses stop being the story and the total volume becomes it, which is how estate pricing should work.
Why hire you when the drop-off is free?
Because the drop-off assumes three things you might not have: a vehicle a mattress fits in, a town transfer-station permit, and a free weekday morning. If all three are true, honestly — use the program, and our mattress disposal guide on the blog walks you through it. When any of them is false, or the mattress is on the third floor, or it's one item in a bigger pile, that's the job we exist for. Same-day for most of our service area when you call before 11 AM.
