What we take, what we don't

On the junk truck: furniture, mattresses and box springs ($50 mattress fee where a unit is too damaged or soiled to route through CT's free mattress-recycling program), appliances — refrigerant handled per EPA rules, $50 CFC fee on freon units — televisions and electronics, exercise equipment, general household junk, garage, basement, and attic contents, estate contents, hot tubs, sheds, and decks (demolition quoted separately). Tires ride at a $50 tire fee.

Not on the junk truck: concrete, brick, asphalt, dirt, soil, sod, rock, sand, gravel, tree limbs, and stumps. When a Stratford job has real volume of those — a masonry demo, a patio tear-out — we drop a dumpster instead, sized with the correct weight allowance for heavy debris.

Hazardous waste (paint, motor oil, gasoline, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, asbestos, biohazard material, lithium batteries) never rides on the truck either. Disposal rules in Stratford

The Stratford Transfer Station is on Watson Boulevard, open Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–3:00 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM–noon — closed all holidays except, in a nice local quirk, the day after Thanksgiving. Proof of Stratford residency is required, and only waste generated within the Town of Stratford is accepted. The headline number: residents get 250 pounds of refuse per month at no charge; above the allowance it's $110 per ton — $11 per 200 pounds. Accepted: refuse, recycling including cardboard, large items including appliances, metal, brush, yard waste, and used motor oil. Bulk pickup — one appointment per household per year

That line is the whole story, so it's worth reading twice. Stratford's Bulk Waste Pickup Program requires an appointment before anything goes curbside — Public Works, (203) 385-4080, weekdays 7:00 AM–3:00 PM — and each household gets one appointment per year, in a defined season running roughly April into late September. If all appointment slots fill before the season ends, no further appointments are taken that year, per the town's program structure. Spend the one appointment on a single recliner in spring, and the estate cleanout later that year waits until next season. The current season's details are on the town's site.

The rules on the day, per the town's guidelines: items curbside, organized, by 7:00 AM on the scheduled date, and nothing curbside more than three days before the appointment. Acceptable: furniture, mattresses and box springs, carpeting, fencing and decking cut to 4 feet maximum, appliances with doors removed from refrigerators and freezers, and large metal items at 4 feet maximum, with all metal separated from everything else. Not acceptable: household garbage, cardboard, brush, leaves, branches, hazardous materials, paint, recyclables, tires, stumps, vehicles, oil tanks, and demolition materials — asphalt shingles, sheetrock, concrete, tile, brick, masonry. One more curbside fact: refuse cans must be standard 32-gallon — 45-gallon cans will not be collected under the town's automated system, which runs on 96-gallon green trash and blue recycling carts.

The gap: demolition materials

Notice what's excluded from both lists. Demolition materials can't go to the bulk pickup and can't go to the transfer station — sheetrock, shingles, tile, masonry have no municipal path in Stratford at all.
