What we take, what we don't

On the junk truck: furniture, mattresses and box springs ($50 mattress fee where a unit is too damaged or soiled to route through CT's free mattress-recycling program), appliances — refrigerant handled per EPA rules, $50 CFC fee on freon units — televisions and electronics, exercise equipment, general household junk, garage, basement, and attic contents, estate contents, hot tubs, sheds, and decks (demolition quoted separately). Tires ride at a $50 tire fee.

Not on the junk truck: concrete, brick, asphalt, dirt, soil, sod, rock, sand, gravel, tree limbs, and stumps. When a Trumbull job has real volume of those — a stone-wall demo, a patio tear-out — we drop a dumpster instead, sized with the correct weight allowance for heavy debris.

Hazardous waste (paint, motor oil, gasoline, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, asbestos, biohazard material, lithium batteries) never rides on the truck either. Disposal rules in Trumbull

Start with the town's best deal: the Large Item Pickup Program. Trumbull picks up large items curbside at no charge — one pickup per household per year, appointment only, scheduled Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, running roughly April through September (the season typically opens in early April, snow permitting). It excludes hazardous materials, including oil-based paint, and it excludes demolition materials. If your job is one big item and you can get it to the curb in season, book the town pickup before you call anyone — including us.

Four cases where the free pickup doesn't work — each a real reason we exist here:

• It's demolition debris — reno tear-out, deck boards, shed panels, drywall. Excluded from the program, and charged at the station.
• It's October through March. The program is closed for the season.
• You've already used your one pickup this year.

The transfer station

The TEaM Transfer Station is at 101 Spring Hill Road — (203) 452-5167, open Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–2:45 PM and Saturday 7:00 AM–11:45 AM. Note the short Saturday: the window closes before noon. Trumbull residents need a CT driver's license and nothing else — no permit, no fee.

Free for residents: household garbage, bulky items including furniture and mattresses, appliances, grass, leaves, and brush (logs no longer than 4 feet). Also free in designated areas: single-stream recycling, scrap metal, electronics, residential motor oil and cooking oil, antifreeze, fluorescent bulbs, all batteries, CDs, and audio and video cassettes.

What costs money: demolition materials at $12 per 125 pounds — roughly $0.10 a pound, about $96 on a 1,000-pound demo load — and tires at $2 each. Credit or debit card only, no cash; tickets are no longer sold.

Commercial contractors pay to dump: $8 per 125 pounds of trash or brush, $35 per load for loose leaves, $35 per ton for an oversized truck — card only. Blue recycling bins are $15, exact cash, at the Highway Department, 366 Church Hill Road, Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–3:00 PM.

Water-based and latex paint can be dried out with Speedi Dri or kitty litter and put in the regular trash or brought to the station; oil-based paint waits for the town's annual household hazardous waste collection — or skip the wait, since CT paint retailers take back latex and oil-based paint free, year-round, under the state's Paint Stewardship Program. Doing it yourself in Trumbull

The blunt version: if you live in Trumbull, have a truck and a license, and can lift what you're tossing, the station costs you nothing and you should go. We are not competing with free, and we won't pretend to.
