driveway-cleanup-equipment in West Haven, CT by Grizzly Junk Pros

Newtown sits 50 to 55 minutes from our Stamford depot via I-84 — the largest town by area in lower Fairfield County, with a dispatch mix to match: estate cleanouts on the larger Sandy Hook, Hawleyville, and Botsford properties, post-renovation hauls in the older central blocks, and the storage cycles that come with real acreage. Newtown also runs the most distinctive disposal system of any town we serve: trash at the Ethan Allen Road transfer station is paid per town-sold bag at published prices, and bulky waste — the couch, the chair, the rug — is free of charge to residents with a valid permit. If your job is one big item and you hold a permit, the station is the answer and we'll say so plainly. The bag math, the free-bulky rule, and the one stream the permit doesn't cover are below.

The truck

We show up with a 20 cubic yard truck — bigger than the standard 15-17 cubic yard industry truck, so you can toss more for less. More volume per dispatch means fewer trips, lower aggregate cost on bigger jobs, and predictable sizing math when we tier the truck-load pricing. The two-man crew rides with the truck — we do the loading, you point at the pile.

Common Newtown junk removal calls

Sandy Hook / Hawleyville estate cleanouts

Larger rural-residential properties, multi-generational accumulation, multi-day projects. See estate cleanouts.

Botsford / Dodgingtown renovation debris

Mid-century housing stock generating steady renovation hauls. Often paired with a Newtown dumpster rental.

Multi-day downsizing dispatches

Whole-property downsizing across larger Newtown lots. See whole-home cleanouts.

Pricing — $179 to $979 by truck-space used

Junk removal is priced by truck-space at the end of the job, not by item count. Thirteen tiers from $179 minimum (single-item or small-pile pickups) to $979 full truckload. Common reference points:

  • $179 minimum — a single mattress, an old appliance, a small pile of junk by the curb
  • $359 — quarter truck — typical garage cleanout or partial basement
  • $559 — half truck — apartment-sized cleanout, single-room renovation debris
  • $809 — three-quarter truck — single-family decluttering, large estate room
  • $979 — full 20-yard truck — full-property cleanouts, whole-home work

We confirm the tier on site before the truck pulls away. No bait-and-switch up after the work starts.

When loading the dumpster yourself isn’t the right call — small volume, awkward access, or you just want it gone today — we send a crew. Pricing runs by truck space used, not by item. Final pricing confirmed before removal begins.

What we take, what we don't

On the junk truck: furniture, mattresses and box springs ($50 mattress fee where a unit is too damaged or soiled to route through CT's free mattress-recycling program), appliances — refrigerant handled per EPA rules, $50 CFC fee on freon units — televisions and electronics, exercise equipment, general household junk, garage, basement, and attic contents, estate contents, hot tubs, sheds, and decks (demolition quoted separately). Tires ride at a $50 tire fee.

Not on the junk truck: concrete, brick, asphalt, dirt, soil, sod, rock, sand, gravel, tree limbs, and stumps. When a Newtown job has real volume of those — a stone-wall demo, a patio tear-out — we drop a dumpster instead, sized with the correct weight allowance for heavy debris.

Hazardous waste (paint, motor oil, gasoline, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, asbestos, biohazard material, lithium batteries) never rides on the truck either. Paint goes back to retailers free, year-round, under CT's Paint Stewardship Program. For the rest, we'll point you to the right channel on the phone.

Disposal rules in Newtown

The Newtown Transfer Station is on Ethan Allen Road off Route 25, open Tuesday–Saturday 7:00 AM–3:00 PM. A transfer station permit is required — registered to the vehicle and affixed to the windshield, obtainable with proof of residency. The town changed its pricing system in July 2025 and doesn't publish a current permit fee where we can verify it, so get the number from the town; newtown-ct.gov has the details.

The bag system

Trash disposal at the station runs on town-sold bags, at prices the town publishes: $1.05 per 13-gallon bag, $2.60 per 32-gallon bag, $4.40 per 55-gallon bag, sold by the box or roll. That's the structure — you pay per bag of trash, not a flat tipping fee, so the cost of a station run scales with exactly how much you bring.

Bulky waste is free — use it

The honest headline: bulky waste is free of charge to Newtown residents with a valid permit — restricted to large household items that cannot be bagged. The couch, the chair, the rug: a permitted Newtown resident dumps them free, Tuesday through Saturday, and if that's your whole job, do that. Recycling is free too, and recycling bins are available at the Highway Department, 4 Turkey Hill Road, 7:00 AM–4:30 PM. We are not competing with free, and we won't pretend to.

The gap: construction and demolition material

The permit does not include construction and demolition material — C&D is charged separately, at rates the town doesn't publish where we can verify them, so ask the town for current numbers. That's the one residential stream the permit doesn't cover: the sheetrock, the pulled deck boards, the renovation debris. For steady demo volume past roughly 5 cubic yards, a roll-off dumpster in Newtown on site is the cleaner answer, sized with the correct weight allowance for the heavy material.

Doing it yourself in Newtown

If you have a permit, a truck, and items you can lift, Newtown's system is genuinely favorable: bulky free, trash by the bag at posted prices, recycling free. Where we come in: no truck or no permit; second-floor furniture; disassembly; weight one person shouldn't handle; estate-scale volume that's more than a few trips up Route 25; the C&D the permit excludes; or a timeline that won't wait. Our numbers: $179 minimum, $359 for a quarter truckload (5 cubic yards), $979 for a full 20-cubic-yard truck — one trip, our crew, all the lifting.

What Newtown customers say

  • Y
Spectacular service, even during Covid! First, a human answered their phone immediately and was clear and courteous. How rare these days! I got an appointment for next day! As promised, received a call that crew was on its way. My mother gave me last minute permission to move a fridge, not part of original request. So I had to tell the poor guys upon arrival that there was a surprise fridge move, two in fact, one removed, one moved within house. Crew didn't flinch. Then one fridge move required its doors AND house door to come off, which they achieved with impressive skill. I'm a manager in my work life and can say their professionalism was superb. Also, important for environment, the company claims to recycle materials. A+ on every level.

Amazing experience! I would definitely hire them again! Every interaction with this company, from setting up the appointment with Justin, and then having to move it up, because my long distance home movers moved up their delivery day at the last minute, and to the appointment itself, has been a wonderful, and positive experience. When we had to change my delivery window at the last minute, Justin was incredibly helpful and accommodating. And the amazing movers, Eric and Mike, "Big Mike", were so wonderful, professional, helpful, kind, and did excellent work.

It's spring cleaning time! Who am I going to call? the same great company I called 3 times before...grizzly junk pros! I have found these guys to be experts in moving large bulky items. They are hard workers, honest, fair and extremely efficient. I won't take a chance on any other company because I know what to expect from this one. They've done my cellar, things inside the house and now will call them for cleaning out the attic. The areas I've called them for aren't easy to maneuver in...amazing how they adapt to the job at hand.

Demo work in Newtown

Junk removal and demolition go together. About a third of our Newtown dispatches involve some demo before the haul — kitchen cabinets coming out before the gut renovation, an old deck that needs to come down before the lumber gets hauled, a backyard shed that’s done its time. We do both in one job, one crew, one invoice.

Common Newtown combo jobs: kitchen demo + appliance haul, deck teardown + lumber removal, shed demolition + debris hauling, basement gut work with the debris pulled the same day. Demo work is quoted separately — pricing varies by scope — but we can schedule both on the same truck visit.

Junk removal FAQs — Newtown

Do I need a permit for the Newtown Transfer Station?
Yes — a transfer station permit registered to the vehicle and affixed to the windshield, obtainable with proof of residency. The town changed its pricing system in July 2025 and no current permit fee is published where we can verify it — newtown-ct.gov and the town offices have the current number.
How does Newtown's bag system work?
Trash disposal at the station runs on town-sold bags at published prices: $1.05 per 13-gallon bag, $2.60 per 32-gallon, $4.40 per 55-gallon, sold by the box or roll. You pay per bag of trash rather than a flat fee, so the cost scales with the load. Bulky items that can't be bagged are a separate — and free — category for permitted residents.
Can I bring a couch to the Newtown Transfer Station for free?
Yes — bulky waste is free of charge to Newtown residents with a valid permit, restricted to large household items that cannot be bagged: the couch, the chair, the rug. If that's your whole job, use the station — it's open Tuesday–Saturday, 7:00 AM–3:00 PM. We're for the loads the free path doesn't fit: no permit, no truck, stairs, disassembly, or volume.
What about construction debris?
The permit does not include construction and demolition material — C&D is charged separately, at rates the town doesn't publish where we can verify them, so check with the town for current numbers. For renovation debris at volume — past roughly 5 cubic yards — a [roll-off dumpster](/dumpster-rental-in-newtown-ct) on site is usually the cleaner answer.
Is it cheaper to haul it myself in Newtown?
Often, yes — and we'll say it plainly: with a valid permit, bulky waste is free, trash is by the bag at posted prices, and recycling is free. The counterweight is trips, labor, and the excluded stream: a whole-house cleanout is many trips up Route 25, second-floor furniture needs two people, and C&D isn't covered by the permit at all. Our minimum is $179; a quarter truckload (5 cubic yards) is $359; a full truck is $979 — one trip, and the crew does the lifting.
What's the cheapest junk removal job you'll take in Newtown?
Our minimum charge is $179 — covers a single mattress, an old appliance, a small pile of junk by the curb. Anything that fits in less than 1/8 of our truck. For very small jobs, that's the floor. Larger jobs scale up by truck-space used, all the way to $979 for a full 20-cubic-yard load.
What can't go in your trucks?
Hazardous waste — paint, motor oil, gasoline, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, asbestos, biohazardous material. Lithium and other batteries. CT and NY both run household hazardous-waste programs through most municipalities; we'll point you to the right channel for anything we can't take. Refrigerators, freezers, ACs, and dehumidifiers are fine, but the refrigerant has to be removed (or already removed) per EPA rules — we can document this on pickup.
Do I need to be home for the pickup?
Not always — depends on the job. For interior cleanouts where the crew needs access through the house, yes. For driveway, garage, or yard pickups where items are already accessible, often no — we coordinate on the call. Estate cleanouts and tenant-out scenarios where the family or property manager isn't on-site work fine if access and scope are pre-confirmed.
How fast can you come to Newtown?
Same-day before 11 AM is the standard target for in-area dispatch. After 11 AM, next-day is realistic. Same-day after 11 AM or on weekends is sometimes possible if the schedule allows — call (203) 219-8855, Mon–Fri 8 AM – 4 PM live, AI after-hours and weekends, to ask.
