Roof tear-offs are the most weight-sensitive loads we haul. A square of asphalt shingles — 100 square feet of roof — weighs about 300 pounds coming off, which means a modest 15-square colonial sheds over two tons before lunch. Sizing a tear-off can by eyeballing volume is how roofing jobs end up with surprise scale charges; sizing by squares is how we quote them.
We run tear-off cans across all of Connecticut from yards in Stamford and West Haven, same flat rates everywhere: $447 to $899 by size, 7 days and a per-size weight allowance included.
Size by squares, not by looks
Count your squares (roof length × width ÷ 100, times layers), then read down:
- Up to ~3 squares — 10-yard, $447. Garage roofs, porch roofs, shed re-roofs, small repair tear-outs. 1,000 lbs included.
- Up to ~6 squares — 15-yard, $547. Small ranches and capes, single-layer. 2,000 lbs included.
- Up to ~13 squares — 20-yard, $647. The standard tear-off can for most single-layer residential roofs. 4,000 lbs included — and the size where our standing disclosure applies: on a roof, the weight cap is the real capacity, and the can will look far from full when you hit it.
- Up to ~20 squares, or any two-layer job — 30/40 two-can tier, $899. Delivered as two 20-yard cans, side by side or swapped mid-job. 6,000 lbs combined.
Past any allowance, overage is $0.10 per pound — the transfer station's rate, no markup. On a tear-off that's not a fine print item, it's the budget line: 5 squares over plan is roughly 1,500 lbs.

The shingle policy, spelled out
Asphalt shingles: accepted in every roll-off size. Felt, drip edge, flashing, nails, and the plywood you replaced ride along fine. What we need from you is honesty about layers and squares so the can matches the load.
Not accepted, roof-adjacent or otherwise: asphalt pavement and millings, concrete, brick, dirt, rock, sand, gravel — the clean-fill family needs a different hauler. Slate is a conversation before it's a booking: it's dramatically heavier per square than asphalt, and on most slate jobs the honest answer is a smaller can filled carefully, weighed eyes-open.
Grizzly Bags are the wrong tool for roofing. Asphalt shingles are on the bag's prohibited-heavy list — tear-offs go in steel cans, full stop.

- Batteries — any kind, lithium especially
- Asbestos-containing materials (specialized hauler required)
- Tires (route to a tire dealer or pay $50/each disposal fee if loaded)
- Medical waste
- Liquids of any kind

What you see is what you book — no zone pricing, no driveway surcharges, no weekend delivery fees. Standard charges for overweight, extension days, and certain prohibited items disclosed above and confirmed at booking.
Tear-off logistics that save real money
Place the can before the crew shows up. Same-day works near our yards when you call before 11 AM, but a tear-off crew standing around waiting for steel is the most expensive way to test our dispatch. Book the day before; it's what our contractor regulars do.
Plan the throw path, then the truck path. The can wants to sit where the debris falls. Our truck wants overhead clearance — wires, branches — at the drop spot, because the hooklift arm rides high during placement. When both can't be satisfied, tarps between roof and can beat an overloaded awkward placement.
Weather extensions are cheap. Rain splits a tear-off across a weekend more often than anyone plans. Days past the included 7 run $15 each — noise compared to rushing a roof.
