Sizing the purge

People undersize moving cans because they picture the junk pile they know about. The purge always grows — the attic, the crawlspace, the garage shelves, the furniture the new place doesn't fit:

  • Apartment move, or a disciplined house purge — the 10-yard at $447. One room's worth of discards plus the closet archaeology.
  • The standard family-house move — the 15-yard at $547, our most-booked moving can. Old furniture, the basement layer, a garage's worth of maybes.
  • Downsizing — the 20-yard at $647. When a 4-bedroom becomes a condo, the furniture staying behind is most of the house.

The moving-week timeline

Day 7 — can lands. Book delivery for the weekend before the move; near our Stamford and West Haven yards, a before-11-AM call often gets same-day, but a move has a known date — book it ahead and forget about it.

Days 6 through 2 — the loop. Pack a room, purge a room. The can outside is what keeps the "deal with it later" pile from getting packed and shipped. Donation-grade furniture is worth pulling aside — the charities we work with take good pieces, and every donated couch is can space back.

Day 1 — can leaves. We pull it the day before the movers come, so the truck gets the driveway. If the purge outran the can, that's a swap call, not a crisis.

What can't make the trip OR the can: paint, solvents, propane tanks, chemicals — the garage shelf no mover will load either. Town hazardous-waste collection days handle those; electronics go free at town drop-offs under CT's e-waste law (details).

Two outs: extend the rental at $15 a day past the included window if it's a time problem, or call for a swap if it's a volume problem — full can out, empty can in, and you keep purging. Every mover finds the attic eventually.
