Construction debris is the load class where knowing the rules up front saves the most money — because the two most expensive mistakes on a C&D can both happen before we ever pick it up: loading material we can't legally dump with the rest, or sizing by volume when the debris bills by weight.

So this page leads with the rules. The accepted list, the excluded list, and the weight math — the same information our dispatchers walk through on every contractor call, at the same flat rates: $447 to $899 by size, statewide.

The excluded list, up front

Not accepted in any can, at any quantity — the clean-fill family:

  • Concrete — slab, footing, sidewalk, chimney brick-and-block
  • Brick, block, and stone — including veneer tear-off and pavers
  • Asphalt pavement and millings — driveway and lot tear-up
  • Dirt, soil, and sod — excavation spoils, regrading waste
  • Rock, sand, and gravel — paver base, drainage stone, fill
  • Whole trees and stumps — root balls included (cut limbs and brush are fine)

These aren't surcharge items; they're a different disposal stream that routes to aggregate recyclers, and a hauler set up for clean fill is the right call for them. If your project is mostly these materials — a patio demo, a driveway tear-out — you don't need us, and we'll tell you so on the phone.

Also excluded, different reason — hazmat: paint, solvents, oils, chemicals (CT DEEP routes), asbestos-suspect materials (licensed abatement only), batteries, liquids of any kind.

What rides — the real C&D stream

Everything else a demo or build phase produces: framing lumber, plywood and sheathing, drywall, plaster and lath, tile, flooring of every kind, cabinets and countertops, fixtures, doors and windows, siding, insulation, roofing shingles and felt, and mixed site debris. Nails in the wood, paint on the trim — normal.

Sizing runs on the density rule. Framing-and-drywall phases are volume loads — pick the size that fits the cubic yards: 15-yard at $547 for single-room scope, 20-yard at $647 for whole-floor scope. Plaster, tile, and shingle phases are weight loads — the allowance (1,000 to 6,000 lbs by size) is the true capacity, and overage past it bills at $0.10/lb, the scale rate passed through. Multi-phase jobs that outrun one can take the 30/40 two-can tier at $899 — two 20s, staged or swapped.

  • Tires (route to a tire dealer or pay $50/each disposal fee if loaded)

What you see is what you book — no zone pricing, no driveway surcharges, no weekend delivery fees. Standard charges for overweight, extension days, and certain prohibited items disclosed above and confirmed at booking.

Job-site notes

Placement. Every can shares one 15-by-8-foot footprint — a parking spot. On active sites we place for the debris path, not the view; on occupied homes, boards under the rails protect the driveway. Street placement needs the town's permission — rules vary town to town, and every town page covers its own.

Cadence. 7 days included per can. Same-day drops work near our Stamford and West Haven yards on before-11-AM calls; scheduled next-day drops work everywhere in the service area. Swaps are a phone call.

Can concrete or brick go in a construction dumpster?
Not in ours — concrete, brick, block, and stone are excluded from every can we run, at any quantity. It's not a surcharge situation; it's a different waste stream. Clean fill routes to aggregate recyclers through haulers equipped for it, and mixing it into a C&D load contaminates both streams. We'll say this on the phone too, before you book, not after you load.
What construction debris IS accepted?
The full mixed-C&D stream minus clean fill and hazmat: framing lumber, plywood, drywall, plaster, tile, flooring, cabinets, countertops, fixtures, doors, windows, siding, insulation, roofing shingles, and general site debris. Wood with nails, painted trim, demo'd built-ins — all normal loads.
Why is asphalt so confusing?
Because it's two different materials wearing one name. Asphalt SHINGLES — the roofing product — are accepted in every size. Asphalt PAVEMENT — driveway material and millings — is clean fill and excluded entirely. One word, opposite answers; it's the single most common clarification call we field.
How should a contractor budget weight on mixed C&D loads?
Each size includes an allowance — 4,000 lbs on the 20-yard workhorse — and overage bills at $0.10/lb, the transfer-station rate passed through. Framing-and-drywall loads usually stay inside the allowance; plaster guts, tile demo, and shingle-heavy mixes usually don't. Bid the overage into density-heavy phases and it stops being a surprise line item.
Can you swap cans on an active job site?
Yes — full can out, empty can in, same booking. On production schedules the two-can 30/40 tier often beats serial swaps: one can stages while the other fills.
