Grizzly Bags are Connecticut-only. County-wide details: dumpster rental in Westchester County, NY.
Mount Vernon's sanitation rules say it plainly: debris from demolition, construction, alterations and house renovations "must be legally disposed of by the homeowner or contractor performing such work." Lumber, plaster, sheetrock, roofing, kitchen cabinets and counters are all named. The City doesn't collect any of it, so on most Mount Vernon remodels the question isn't whether you need a container. It's where it sits.
Street placement goes through Public Works
If it can't go on your property, you need the Commissioner of Public Works. The City's Permits page says no one may occupy a public street, highway or sidewalk without a written permit from the Commissioner, and it points to sections 227:38 through 227:43 of the Municipal Code. The Demolition Permit page adds that a dumpster on a public street or sidewalk may need a separate DPW permit even when the building permit is in hand.
The City also links a set of dumpster permit guidelines from that page. They ask that the carting company be licensed with the City of Mount Vernon, and that a permit covering a metered spot go to the Parking Authority for a meter bag. Those guidelines carry no date, so we won't quote their fees. Call Public Works (office hours in the FAQ) for the current numbers before you book a street spot. We steer Mount Vernon jobs to a driveway or lot whenever there's room. If the box has to go on the street, Grizzly confirms the permit paperwork, including the carting license the City asks for, before it's placed.
What the curb will and won't handle
The Bureau of Sanitation takes bulk, but with a cap of four non-metal items per household. Mattresses have to be in bedding bags. Toilets, sinks and tubs are on the prohibited list, so a bathroom gut can't go out piece by piece.
Metal is seasonal. Washers, dryers, stoves, hot water tanks and cast iron tubs are picked up from April through September, by appointment only. If you're clearing a basement in November, the old water heater either waits for spring or goes in the box.
We didn't find a City drop-off yard for residents on the City's site.
Picking a size
An attic or a single room of furniture usually fits a 10-yard. Once cabinets, flooring and drywall are coming out, look at the 15 or 20, and ask us before you decide.

What customers in Mount Vernon are saying
Y “Spectacular service, even during Covid! First, a human answered their phone immediately and was clear and courteous. How rare these days! I got an appointment for next day! As promised, received a call that crew was on its way. My mother gave me last minute permission to move a fridge, not part of original request. So I had to tell the poor guys upon arrival that there was a surprise fridge move, two in fact, one removed, one moved within house. Crew didn't flinch. Then one fridge move required its doors AND house door to come off, which they achieved with impressive skill. I'm a manager in my work life and can say their professionalism was superb. Also, important for environment, the company claims to recycle materials. A+ on every level.”
Y “Amazing experience! I would definitely hire them again! Every interaction with this company, from setting up the appointment with Justin, and then having to move it up, because my long distance home movers moved up their delivery day at the last minute, and to the appointment itself, has been a wonderful, and positive experience. When we had to change my delivery window at the last minute, Justin was incredibly helpful and accommodating. And the amazing movers, Eric and Mike, "Big Mike", were so wonderful, professional, helpful, kind, and did excellent work.”
Y “It's spring cleaning time! Who am I going to call? the same great company I called 3 times before...grizzly junk pros! I have found these guys to be experts in moving large bulky items. They are hard workers, honest, fair and extremely efficient. I won't take a chance on any other company because I know what to expect from this one. They've done my cellar, things inside the house and now will call them for cleaning out the attic. The areas I've called them for aren't easy to maneuver in...amazing how they adapt to the job at hand.”
