Croton-on-Hudson has a permit written for exactly this. The Village's Dumpster/Pod Parking application covers a container in the street right-of-way, and the Engineering Department handles it. The first three days carry no daily parking fee. After that, a fee runs each day, and the form asks for insurance papers.
The conditions on the permit
The form's second page reads like a placement checklist:
- Set the box as far outside the traffic lane as it will go.
- Put cones or other caution devices on both sides.
- Lay a protective layer of wood between the container's bearing points and the ground.
- Remove it within 24 hours of it filling up, of the work ending, or of the permit's end date, whichever comes first.
There's also a snow clause, covered in the FAQ. For a winter job on a street spot, a short rental with a planned swap is easier to live with than one long one.
On a private driveway the permit doesn't come into it.
What the Village sends back to the contractor
The construction debris page tells residents to arrange disposal with their contractor, because most of that material can't go out with trash or recycling. Roof shingles are named as construction and demolition debris, not something for pickup. A tear-off is container work from the first bundle. On a small roof a 10- or 15-yard box is the usual pick; ask us before you go bigger.
What still goes at the curb
Household items are a different matter. Mattresses and most furniture go out on the regular collection day, though a couch-bed needs its metal frame pulled first. Scrap metal gets a Wednesday special pickup if you schedule one. Refrigerators can't simply be set out; if the Village agrees to take one at the curb, a licensed technician has to remove the Freon first.
