Do I need to drain the hot tub first?

Can you remove a hot tub that's built into a deck?

What happens to the hot tub after you take it?
It rides out in our own can and gets broken down at the transfer station — shell as bulky waste, frame lumber with the wood stream, and the metal (heater, pump, frame fasteners) pulled for scrap where the facility takes it.
Is winter a bad time to remove a hot tub?
