New Haven County is home turf. Our West Haven yard puts our trucks on I-95 and Route 34 every working day, and the 4 roll-off trucks, 100 identical 20-yard cans behind our 20,000+ completed jobs (Grizzly Junk Pros job data, Jan 2019 – Aug 2026) spend a lot of their week between Milford and Madison. So when we phone-shopped the county's roll-off operators in August 2026, we weren't shopping strangers — we were pricing the market our neighbors actually call.
The headline is good news if you live here: New Haven County returned the lowest median 20-yard quote of the three metro counties we surveyed. The details are where it gets interesting — this is the county where per-pound overage billing is the norm rather than the exception, where two-week rental windows are common, and where the single cheapest full-size quote in our entire statewide survey lives. New Haven's $560 median undercuts both Fairfield and Hartford — but its range, $532-715, is wide enough that shopping still matters. The bottom of the county's market and the top differ by more than the price of a second small can. Per-pound country
The structural quirk of the New Haven County market: three of the five operators we reached bill overage per pound — two at $0.09/lb, one at $0.10/lb — where most of the state bills per ton (phone survey of 25 Connecticut operators, August 2026). That's our model too, and we'll defend it: per-pound billing charges you for the debris you actually loaded. Per-ton billing usually rounds up, so a load that squeaks 300 lbs over an allowance can trigger a full-ton charge. The per-pound rates look scarier on paper — $0.09/lb works out to $180/ton; $0.10/lb to $200/ton — but for the common case of a load landing just past its allowance, they're the cheaper structure.
The county's spread rewards reading the whole row. NH-5's 12-yard at $319 with a ton included is the lowest full-size quote in the survey — a genuinely good price for a light cleanout. At the other end, NH-2 quotes the county's priciest 20-yard at $715 but backs it with 3.5 tons included, the most generous 20-yard allowance we found in the county, and runs a full five-size ladder up to a 40-yard at $895 with 5 tons. Cheapest sticker and cheapest project are different questions; a heavy load could land cheaper in NH-2's can than in one that starts well below it.
And a scheduling note that surprised us: 14-day windows at three of five county operators, against the 7-day majority statewide. If your project needs two slow weekends, New Haven County is a good place to shop for time.
What an extra day costs
Extension pricing across the full statewide survey runs $10-$80 across the survey — and the extremes are instructive. One operator charges no daily fee at all; one operator charges $75/week, the only weekly structure we found, and it belongs to a New Haven County operator that pairs it with a $15/day option (phone survey of 25 Connecticut operators, August 2026).
