Washington may be the prettiest town we deliver to — Washington Depot down in the Shepaug's valley, the Green on its hill above, New Preston perched at the falls by Lake Waramaug, Marbledale strung along Route 202. Old houses, heavy debris
Washington's housing stock leans antique, and antique demo weighs. Plaster, chestnut framing, slate — figure nearly double the pounds per cubic yard of a modern tear-out. When in doubt between sizes, buy the allowance, not the airspace: the cans all share the same 15-foot footprint anyway, so the upgrade money goes to pounds and wall height, never a bigger driveway problem.

How far out should I book a Washington delivery?
A day ahead, minimum. Washington sits toward the edge of our range — roughly an hour from our West Haven yard, up Route 8 and across through Woodbury — so next-day is the default and same-day isn't on the menu. Book when you know your demo week and the can will be there.
Can you work with a caretaker or property manager instead of the owner?
Routinely. A lot of Washington places are weekend homes with a local caretaker running the project. We'll coordinate the delivery window, placement, and pickup directly with whoever's on the ground — the owner just needs to be the one who books and pays.
What size for a full interior refresh of an old farmhouse?
Plan on the 20-yard at $647. Farmhouse demo is heavy — plaster and old framing — and the 20's 4,000-lb allowance is the buffer you want. Anything over is $0.10/lb, metered at the scale.
Are stone walls or old foundation rubble loadable?
No — stone, brick, concrete, and dirt are excluded from every standard load, and so are stumps. Renovation debris, furnishings, and household material are what the can is for. Masonry needs its own disposal path.
Is there a delivery surcharge for the Litchfield hills?
No. The drive is priced into the same $447-to-$899 ladder everyone gets. What changes at this distance is scheduling honesty — next-day windows, not premium fees.
Do I need a permit to use the Washington transfer station?
Yes — Washington requires a resident permit for station access, per the town's posted rules. Factor the permit into any DIY disposal math; our trucks don't need one because we don't use the resident line.
When is the Washington transfer station open?
The town posts (as published September 2026): Transfer Station Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat: 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. CLOSED Thursday and Sunday. ‘Please Note: The lower gate closes at 1:55 pm.’ ‘Transfer Station will be closed all holidays Town Offices are closed.’ Holiday closures apply — check the town's page before you load, or skip the trip entirely and let the can take the schedule problem off your plate.
